The art of the 3 and 5 step tends to be forgotten at the youth and high school level. The idea of lining up in shotgun and basing an offense out of this formation has become more of a standard in today’s game. Still, there are those coaches that believe in lining up their quarterbacks under center and attacking a defense through timed 3 and 5 step passing games. Developing simple fundamentals in footwork, drops, throwing mechanics, and weight transfer at an early age has provided the ground work for the quarterback position. With more of an emphasis on the passing game and the number of quarterbacks developing at a faster rate, colleges coaches are drawn more towards polished as opposed to potential. During the introduction stages to the quarterback position, there should be a stronger emphasis on developing the proper footwork, set-up, and stance. Understanding how to throw the football and the mechanics involved are all equally important but your feet, shoulders, and hips must be in sync. Coach Ken Mastrole has taken his experience from the high school to NFL level and applied a collection of teachings and research to his program. “Our quarterback academy starts at the ground level providing each athlete the tools to better understand how footwork, alignment, and stroke path are all important factors in the development of the position” Mastrole states. Breaking down the movements in a manner that maximizes muscle memory is how Mastrole Passing Academy has produced quarterbacks that are ahead of the competition. “We are seeing our youth to high school quarterbacks excel across the board. Colleges coaches across the country are recognizing how our academy teaches more then just how to throw the football. We are providing the handbook on the physical and mental approach to the position.”
Coach Ken Mastrole and his staff have been recognized by a number of media sources as the leaders in the development of the quarterback position. the Miami Herald, Scout.com, and Tom Luginbill of ESPNU have all commented on the South Florida based quarterback academy. Coach Mastrole has formed one of the best coaching staffs in the country. Art Hall, who played in the National Football League, has developed a number of quarterbacks over the years while being courted by a number of top camps to work with quarterbacks. Nike and University of Miami are just two of the organizations and universities that have requested the services of coach Hall. John Congemi is one of the most respected and recognized quarterbacks ever to play for the University of Pittsburgh. The former Panther and CFL great still holds a number of school records and now works with Mastrole Passing Academy. The resumes of this trio Mastrole, Hall, and Congemi are impressive and have provided Florida quarterbacks a place to develop and hone their skills.
