Even though Boca Raton graduated 20 seniors, including 12 starters, coach Keith Byars said not much has changed.

“It is just like Pepsi and Coke,” said Byars after his Bobcats pulled out a 21-17 victory over visiting Hollywood Hills in a preseasonkickoff classic game on Friday night. “The product is the same. The only thing that changes is the packaging.”

“It was a typical preseason game,” added Byars, whose team had two field goals and a punt blocked and was burned for two long scoring passes. “We have to take away the mental mistakes.”

Anderson found Desmond Hall for a 43-yard pickup to set up the Bobcats’ first TD of the night on a 2-yard plunge by Tard McCoy on Boca’s opening series of the game.

Hollywood Hills cut the lead to 14-10 before halftime on a 99-yard scoring toss from Daniel May to Andres Larrieu and a 23-yard field goal by Sebastian Alvarez.

Boca Raton‘s Ryan Walters turned in the highlight play of the night with a one-handed interception and 63-yard interception to the Spartans’ 2-yard line with 4:48 remaining in the third quarter. One play later, Jean Teneus went in for the score and extended the lead to 21-10.

Hollywood Hills’ May connected with Thurston Armbrister for a 70-yard TD with 30 seconds remaining in the third quarter. May finished the night with 312 yards passing and two scores.
Boca, which lost in the Class 6A regional semifinal last year, took a 14-0 first-half lead behind quarterback Kevin Anderson. The sophomore Anderson threw a 25-yard scoring toss to Cameron Lewis with 8:31 remaining in the first half to push the lead to 14-0.

by Scott Clair of the Naples Daily News

http://tiny.cc/s5z28

NAPLES — Kenneth Mouton made an impressive return as Golden Gate’s quarterback Friday night, leading the Titans to a 46-15 victory over host St. John Neumann.

In the days leading up to the game, it was uncertain Mouton would even play, having sprained an ankle last week during practice.

Despite the mucky field, Mouton showed no signs that the injury slowed him down. Now a junior, Mouton started for the Titans as a freshman in 2008. Last season, he transferred to Gulf Coast, but left the Sharks team, days into the season.

In January he returned to Golden Gate, where his mother teaches math.

And on Friday, the 6-foot-1, 210-pound signal caller passed for 128 yards and two touchdowns. Mouton also rushed for 93 yards, including a second quarter 30-yard gallop into the end zone.

“Mouton was outstanding,” said Titans coach Steve Crowley. “He threw well and ran well. He led us.”

The Titans scored twice in the opening minutes of the first quarter to take a 12-0 lead. However, Neumann responded with two touchdowns, including a 35-yard pass from quarterback Dylan Woods to Garrett Ocana.

With the two scores, Neumann took a 15-12 lead. That would be all the offense the Titans would allow then the rest of the game, which was delayed 90 minutes due to lightning.

From the midpoint of the second quarter, the Titans defense, led by linebacker Fedney Delphonse, didn’t allow a positive gain by the Celtics until the fourth quarter.

“I give our team a ‘C.’” Crowley said. “Neumann battled tough.”

The Titans running back duo of Jermain Troutman and Shamol Miller were also effective. Troutman scored on runs of three and eight yards. Miller ran for 109 yards, including a 43-yard touchdown.

Golden Gate opens up its season against Gulf Coast on Friday. The Celtics will travel to district foe St. Stephens next week.

Kenneth Mouton has been training with Private quarterback coach Ken Mastrole at the Mastrole Passing Academy in Naples, Florida.

Mastrole Passing Academy is the leader in quarterback development

Providing private and group quarterback training for all high school and youth quarterbacks

Mastrole Passing Academy quarterback Jake Rudock of St. Thomas Aquinas made a quick night of work in the 2010 preseason kickoff classic.

By Patrick Lammer August 26, 2010 09:50 PM

“It was really good to be able to not always get your own guys,” said Rudock, a senior who has verbally committed to Iowa. “Being able to go against other guys is a lot better than just repetitive hitting your own people.

“We’re getting there. We’re getting better. Every day you have to get better and better. That’s what we’re trying to do.”

The Raiders’ defense was just as stellar, spearheaded by a 19-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown by Khambrel Garland. St. Thomas held Coral Glades to minus-8 yards on 21 plays in the first half enroute to a 42-0 halftime score.

The Jaguars didn’t earn their first first down until there were 11 seconds left in the third quarter.

Several young players stood out for St. Thomas, including junior defensive lineman Jelani Hamilton (6-5/245), and sophomore running backs Frederick Coppet (5-9/170) and Walter Tucker (5-11/195). The Raiders finished with 450 yards of total offense to Coral Glades’ 46.

“We played everybody I think we dressed except the punter, which is good,” St. Thomas coach George Smith said.

“Anything like this helps, it helps you. It kind of rejuvenates the spirit of going out there and practicing every damn day. But we’ve got a big test coming up. We’ve got a lot of work to do.”

The Raiders open the regular season against Skyline High of Dallas on Sept. 6 in Arlington, Texas. Coral Glades opens at Piper on Sept. 3.

From the humble days of the state and national letters of intent to billion dollar corporations backing some of the finest, young athletes around, recruiting has continued to reach new heights in the never-ending quest to find, evaluate and promote high school talent.

The days of the single talent scout roaming the sidelines in places such as Berwick, Pa., Massilon, Ohio or the dozens of other national hotbeds are over. Today, the rules are different. There are eyes and ears at everything that goes on from a small practice to a nationally-televised game.

In South Florida alone, there isn’t a weekend that goes by without some high school football related event taking place. There is a need to know which teams and players are going to be good for years to come.

Because of ninth-grader Sony Michel of American Heritage, the bar has been raised so high that football fans across this impressive region are now digging beyond this upcoming 2014 class. They are thirsting to know what Bunche Park player is the next Teddy Bridgewater or what Lauderdale Lakes receiver will follow in Phillip Dorsett’s shoes at St. Thomas Aquinas.

With the youth football season getting started around South Florida, the stars of tomorrow are being groomed from Florida City and Goulds to Deerfield Beach and Pompano Beach.

With the attention so much on what players will attend Columbus, Northwestern, Central and Southridge in the future, more emphasis has been focused to the youth football fields, where a Scott Lake/Bunche Park matchup would attract more than most high school games – for any of the seven plus games.

While youth football has served as an important building block for players such as Asante Samuel, Kenny Phillips, Bryant McFadden, Sean Taylor and so many others, it is, in some neighborhoods, the ‘only’ game in town.

This year, youth football in South Florida will have an opportunity to showcase many of those stars of the future as Mastrole Passing Camp and Generation Nexxt Youth Sports Marketing will host a first ever youth football camp (open to all youth players 8-14 years of age) at the Lauderhill Sports Complex on July 30 from 5-9 p.m.

Billed as “Future Friday Night Stars,” this Friday night event is giving athletes and their families the chance to come out and learn from high school coaches from Miami-Dade and Broward counties.

“This is an idea that came out of all the young players who attended our quarterback camps,” said Ken Mastrole. “This is chance for many athletes all over South Florida to come out and see how they stack up against others in their own weight and age class.”

In addition to learning from high school coaches, athletes will also have the opportunity to be part of the Generation Nexxt media experience. The largest voice for youth football in South Florida, Generation Nexxt will interview, film and use the information for the Sunday morning TV show as well as in the magazine.

“We are very excited about this event for a number [of] reasons,” said Jonah Woullard of Generation Nexxt. “This is [a] special Friday night event that will showcase the future football players of this region.

“We are also going to use the information from the testing events to rank players by weight class for the upcoming season,” Woullard continued.

The event costs $35 and will provide instruction in speed, technique, fundamentals and total understanding of the game. If you are interested in taking part in this showcase event that will produce some future stars, sign up at www.PassingCamp.com or visit Generation Next (gennexxt.ning.com) for more details.

The Air Raid 11 passing camp held by quarterback coach Ken Mastrole at St. Andrews Prep School brought some of the top quarterbacks around south Florida to compete. The camp featured former Pitt Panther QB great and Mastrole Passing quarterback coach John Congemi, along with Ken Mastrole at the three day event. Quarterbacks and receivers received fundamental training, video analysis through state of the art Dartfish, chalk talks, core strength training, and competition during Friday Nigh Lights. Mastrole Passing Academy also brought in Athlete’s Edge for speed and agility training. Quarterbacks Jake Rudock (St. Thomas Aquinas & Iowa commit), Rafi Montalvo (La Salle), Alex Prakas (West Boca), Troy Cook (Palmetto), Max Lescano (St. Thomas Aquinas), and Georgia transfer Chase Bender all looked like the top guns during the camp. Rafi Montalvo and Max Lescano came out on top during the event winning the Friday Night Lights competition. Sophomore quarterback Troy Cook looked very impressive winning the overall accuracy challenge. The acccuracy challeng featured moving and long target throws. The camp not only taught fundamentals and technique but it also provided athletes a stage to compete in the 20 yd shuttle, vertical, arm strength, accuracy, and movement. In the Future Stars group, Dominic DiCaprio, looked sharp displaying a strong and accurate arm. Dicaprio, only going into the 8th grade, threw the ball 55 yards and displayed excellent footwork and mechanics. Dicaprio who has been working with coach Ken Mastrole the past year showed why he will be one of the top signal callers high school coaches are hoping to have in their backfield.

Look for the these following quarterbacks to make an impact next year:

1. Jake Rudock: Led St. Thomas Aquinas with a 35 TD / 5 int. Committed to the University of Iowa the 2011 signal caller has improved ever part of his game the last two years. Excellent footwork, strong arm, and a consistent throwing motion has allowed Rudock to succeed in the Raider offense. Charachter and work ethic are no question two of the strongest qualities of this quarterback.

2. Rafi Montalvo: The La Salle quarterback took home all county honors last year. Currently being recruited by several big east schools, Montalvo is a dual threat quarterback that can beat you through the air and on the ground. A sub 4 sec shuttle performance combined with mid 4.5′s in the 40 this 2011 quarterback has the mechanics and tools to make an impact this season. Montalvo has a fluid 3 and 5 step drop and does an excellent job of releasing the football early. Excellent work ethic and leadership traits, Montalvo has the ability to play at the next level.

3. Chase Bender: 2012 transfer from Georgia. At 6′-2″, Bender showed a strong arm and excellent movement in the agility testing. Has the frame to add solid muscle over the next year. Delivers a very accurate and strong ball from short to intermediate. Best suited for a pro style type offense. Watch for this 2012 signal caller to make a name for him self in the sunshine state of this season

4. Troy Cook: A sophomore to be, Cook does an excellent job locating targets and placing the ball in those windows. Untested at the Varsity level but has the tools to make an impact as a 2nd year player.

5. Alex Prakas: West Boca senior stand 6′-5″ and throws well in the pocket and on the run. Has the frame to add muscle and may be what colleges are looking for this quarterback. Prakas showed off a strong arm and touch through out the camp. Prakas will be looking to continue where he left off from last season leading the bulls to a playoff appearance.

6. Abe Coleman: Now at Jackson high school, this quarterback had an excellent freshman campaign in 2008. The junior quarterback has the intangibles to play at the next level and has to continued to improve since last season. Strong arm, accurate, and excellent footwork describes this qb.

The Results of the competition

20 Yd Shuttle:

1. Max Lescano (St. Thomas) 4.09 sec

2. Rafi Montlavo (La Salle) 4.19 sec

3. Chase Bender (Cardinal Gibbons) 4.26

Vertical

1. Max Lescano ( St. Thomas) 34.7″

2. Robert Kubond (Charlotte) 30.8″

3. Rafi Montalvo (La Salle) 30.7″

Long Throw

1. Rafi Montalvo (La Salle) 61 yds

2. Gardner Knight (Palm Bay) 56 yds

3. Max Lescano (St. Thomas) & Dominic DiCaprio (Tamarac Cougars) 55 yds

Accuracy

1. Troy Cook (Palmetto) 18 pts

2. Rafi Montalvo (La Salle) 17pts

3. Charlie Cannaday (Gulf Coast) 15 pts
